From commodity money to metallic money, from coin to paper, from banknote to electronic coin. The history of money is one marked by dematerialisation and acceleration. And – as recently shown for instance by the corona pandemic – one of unleashing. How else can money be let loose in such a short time? Where do these masses of money come from and how can we still grasp the complexity of today’s financial world? This exhibition features selected milestones in the history of money. Present-day experts cast light on the topic and open the discussion on the central question “Can we trust our monetary system?” The exhibition was realised in cooperation with the Swiss National Bank. The National Bank and the Bernisches Historisches Museum are partners for a new immersive venue dedicated to the topic of money, which will open in Bern in 2024.
